The Brief
Take on the global mental health crisis with a fresh approach to social media.
In 2019, 970 million people globally were living with a mental health disorder. In 2022, 23.1% of American adults experienced a mental health condition. These challenges are estimated to cost $16 trillion globally by 2030. Is social media playing a starring role in deepening the crisis?
To what extent does social media impact mental health, how do digital natives cope with anxiety, and what design solutions can leverage the playbook of the world's most popular platforms to help young people reduce stress and mend their relationship with social media?

Research & Exploration
An extensive literature review of existing research on social media's impact on mental health, as well as the efficacy of mindfulness apps, was conducted — generating key learnings about agency over content exposure, the impact of passive consumption, the power of short-form video, and the quantifiable effect of mindfulness apps.
A qualitative survey of 65 participants provided essential insights into mental health coping mechanisms employed by the target audience, key motivations for social media and mindfulness app usage, and the preferred features and functionalities of both platforms. A detailed analysis and feature comparison of the leading mindfulness platforms in the market today rounded out market research.
Detailed user personae and a structured journey map enabled the application of the gained research insights to the charting of the full user experience — from problem recognition through to onboarding and long-term adoption — rounding out the initial research phase of the project.
Ideation & Iteration
By cross-analyzing estimated usage frequency and a reward/effort ratio (ROI) based on the conducted research, a feature prioritization list was produced prior to embarking on initial wireframes. Drawing from the established mental models for short-form video apps, wireframes progressed into a low-fidelity prototype that was put to the test through contextual interviews and usability testing to both gauge its efficacy and identify paint points and areas of friction.
Usability testing of the low-fidelity prototype revealed several key issues: the initial content design lacked clarity (particularly concerning the app's value proposition); there were insufficient personalized options for calibrating the algorithm; and the feedback provided within the dedicated global search functionality was inadequate.
To address the challenges encountered by participants during the usability testing, the high-fidelity prototype presented below aimed to:
• Rework the content design through a dedicated onboarding for new users to immediately enhance the value proposition
• Introduce an innovative Quick Search feature, accessible from the main feed, to enable users to update the algorithm and thus content
• Enhance the interaction design and feedback provided during search query submission
